The Stumbling Block

Empiricism, historicism, idealism, realism . . .
All philosophy begs the question
Of how far beyond our condition we can go.
All such speculation is a stumbling block, a scandal—
Philosophy’s games are never worth the candle.
The big thing is, we cannot know,
And knowing this, enjoy insignificance;
Delight in the humility of your dance.
Theology of course is not much better:
Religion is a yoke, if not a fetter.
So say simply to yourself, I am a fool,
And of this foolishness construct your rule,
Quietly harken to the inner voice
That tells you how to make your choice.
